Buying Your First Piano or Keyboard: A Guide for Students and Parents

Congratulations on beginning your journey with piano or keyboard! There are a few important factors to consider when choosing your instrument. In general, when choosing a keyboard or digital piano, you’ll want touch-sensitive keys and an action (the resistance you feel when you press down the keys) that responds like a traditional piano. Typically, students can start with a piano with as few as 61 keys, but older or more advanced students will want to consider a full-size keyboard with 88 keys.

You’ll also want to consider accessories like a piano bench, sustain pedal, and music stand. Some beginner packages come with these accessories included. We’ve put together some of our favorite recommendations for quality, affordable beginner instruments for you or your child here!
